A $45.5 million US Kandinsky painting

Sotheby’s

The Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky’s artwork Murnau mit Kirche II (Murnau with Church II) from 1910 was sold a few weeks ago at Sotheby’s auction in London and it fetched a record breaking sum. The painting with a palette of contrasting nuances in swathes of strong colors depicts a church in the rolling landscape of Murnau in Germany. The painting got stolen by the Nazis during World War II but was later found in a museum in the Netherlands and has since then also gone through a restoration. Murnau mit Kirche II is now the most expensive painting ever from Wassily Kandinsky as it fetched $45.5 million US and because the proceeds from the auction will be used to locate other stolen artworks, hopefully a lot more exquisite paintings can be found!
