An estimated $16 million USD Jean-Michel Basquiat painting is about to be auctioned

A remarkable Jean-Michel Basquiat painting, Sabado por la Noche (Saturday Night), will lead Christie’s Hong Kong 20th/21st Century Evening Sale later this month, coinciding with Art Basel Hong Kong. Painted in 1984 during Basquiat’s collaboration with Andy Warhol, this striking piece is expected to sell for $13 million to $16 million USD.

Known for his signature fusion of text, imagery, and human figures, Basquiat’s Sabado por la Noche is hailed as one of his most iconic works. 1984 marked a defining year for the artist, including his first solo museum show, Jean-Michel Basquiat: Paintings 1981–1984, which traveled to London and Rotterdam.

Christie’s Ada Tsui called the painting “an iconic masterpiece” and noted the auction house’s continued commitment to the Asian market for Basquiat’s works, referencing their record-breaking 2021 sale of Warrior (1982). The public preview runs from March 25 to 27, with the live auction on March 28; an event that no art lover would miss, so we hope that you have the opportunity to check it out!
