Le Bassin aux Nymphéas

At Sotheby’s New York Impressionist and Modern Art evening sale on May 12, the highlight will certainly be a water lilies painting by none other than Claude Monet. The French Impressionist and Abstract Expressionist has become synonymous with lily pond motifs and his Grandes Decorations, which he drew inspiration from his lily pond in his garden in Giverny, France. The large scale painting in the subject for this article is called Le Bassin aux Nymphéas and was made by Monet between 1917- 1919. It is estimated to fetch around $40 million US at the auction, but don’t be surprised if it reaches a higher sum than that. Three years ago, a Monet painting was sold at Christie’s for $84 million US!
