Official Roses x J-Craft - Part III
We felt very happy as we were invited to J-Craft’s shipyard, located in idyllic Fårösund at Gotland, where we were shown around by Chief Master Builder and Head of Production and sales, Johan Hallen, and got to see what J- Craft is all about with our own eyes. Johan Hallen has been with J-Craft since the beginning and while we were walking around the shipyard, he told us everything about J-Craft’s history and philosophy as well as the Torpedo, which we have covered in the first and second parts of this series of articles.
The shipyard was being relocated to Visby, Gotland during our visit but two Torpedos were still at the shipyard; a restored Torpedo named Hermine which was just about to be delivered to its new owner in Stockholm and a Torpedo in progress waiting for the customer’s choice of the color on the hull of the boat. We were actually very astonished at first since the Torpedo was much bigger than we had thought and we were stunned by the incredible luster of the mahogany veneer which was so shining that it became almost blinding. The elegant interior with so many exquisite details was also fascinating to see and it is no wonder why J-Craft is all about the details.
We also had the pleasure of talking to some of J-Craft’s craftsmen. The small team of six people together have more than 150 years of boat building experience, making J-Craft have a very unique amount of knowledge that transcends into the Torpedo. One of the craftsmen, who at the time was polishing one of the 18 layers of polish on the wooden parts, spoke passionately to us about every step of the production and it we were captured to hear him talk about the work they do as we stood some 30 metres away from a finished Torpedo. He said that while the craftsmen thus are able to see the final product as they are working with components and individual pieces to the Torpedo, it really encourages them to put their soul into their work and that it makes them settle for nothing less than perfection. This passion truly transcends into the finished Torpedo which could be looked upon as a way of transferring the soul of the fine craftsmen to the new owner.
