The most expensive paintings sold at auctions in 2017
1. Leonardo Da Vinci, Salvator Mundi
The painting went for $450 million at Christie’s auction in 2017. The piece was reportedly purchased by Mohammed Bin Salman al Saud, the Crown prince of Saudi Arabia.
2. Qi Baishi, Twelve Landscape Screens (1925)
The second most expensive piece went for over $140 million, which is a record price for a Chinese painting at an auction.
3. Jean-Michel Basquiat, Untitled (1982)
Michel Basquiat is well known in the art world and is remembered for his unique style of combining grafitti-like images and text. This painting sold for $110 million, and was bought by the famous billionare Yusaku Maezawa.
4. Vincent van Gogh, Laboureur dans un champ (1889)
Laboureur dans un champ from 1889 was made after Van Gogh got the clearing from his doctor to start painting again after a couple of mental breakdowns. The piece went for $81.3 million at Christie’s.
5. Fernand Léger, Contraste de formes (1913)
The piece Contraste de formes went for $70 million at Christie’s in New York, setting a record price for the artist.
