The most Iconic chairs

In almost every household, a specific piece of furniture is used every day. A chair is mostly thought of as a place to sit down, which of course is the most obvious and important reason, however it can also be an item that could be a very important piece when creating an atmosphere in a room.

Here are five iconic chairs that are simply pieces of art.

Clam chair - Philip Arctander

Most known for his architectual constructions, Philip Arctander would also become synonymous with one and only one design really. But that design would later show to be very appealing  and that is the clam chair. Designed in 1944 for Nordisk Staal  Möbel Central, the clam chair was made in mass quantities and was not at all a luxurious piece of furniture. However, over time that would change and in 2013 a pair were, missattributed to Martin Olsen, sold for more than 220.000 dollars.

Since then the demand has increased rapidly and the clam chair has gained steady traction in the trophy market and you can often see the chairs on auction at Bukowskis, Barnebys, and Christies for exampel.

The Tired Man- Flemming Lassen

This overstuffed easy chair was designed by Flemming Lassen in 1935. The Danish architect was inspired by modernism and he was also a part of the movement that brought Functionalism to Denmark.

The Tired Man created a sensation with its bearlike shapes and voluminous armrests. Lassen wanted to create a feel of domestic cosiness and with The Tired Man's warm exterior, he certainly succeeded. His own words about this chair describe it in a fun and accurate way: "as warm and safe as a polarbear cub in the arms of its mother in the middle of the ice cap".

Depending on condition and fabric the price can vary, but in 2015 at Bruun Rasmussen, a world record for furniture by Flemming Lassen was set. The Tired Man was sold at that auction for a staggering price of 180 000 euros.

Barcelona Chair - Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Perhaps one of the most iconic pieces of furniture in modern design is the Barcelona Chair. Designed in 1929- 31 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Barcelona Chair is made by exquisite craftmanship and the design has his signature "less is more" approach. Dressed in leather with 40 individual panels and a frame of steel, polished by hand, makes it beam elegance.

The German architect was, together with Le Corbusier, one of the most influential pioneers of functionalism and his designs has been hailed all over the world and in 1977,  the Barcelona Chair won the prestigious Museum of Modern Art Award.
