Previously we wrote about the underwater hotel Reefsuites, so why not stay in the underwater genre and continue speaking about the Great Barrier Reef and Australia, but this time in a context of a museum of art complete with sculptures. The installations, made by sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, are located off the shores of Townsville, at Magnetic Island and Palm Island. This has been a three year process and Jason deCaires Taylor’s vision has been to highlight the reef itself, moving the dial on support for conservation and restoration of the Reef as well as educating the general population.

Therefore, the first installment Ocean Siren (which changes in response to the water’s temperature) has been sculpted in the likeness of one of Townsville’s more prolific traditional custodians from the Wulgurukaba nation; Takoda Johnson. The installations are still coming with an expected completion date of late 2020. When the all the installments are in place, they are projected to attract some 50,000 visitors a year and we can see why. Get ready and dive into Jason deCaires Taylor’s fascinating underwater installments!
