Hubert de Givenchy

A 17 year old boy, Hubert de Givenchy, moved to Paris in the 1940’s to follow his dream. What he didn’t know then, was that by following his dream he would later on found a fashion house that would become one of the most successful in history. Givenchy’s contribution to fashion is undeniable, and it is no wonder that he was celebrated as one of the most elegant men in the world.

Hubert de Givenchy was drawn to the world of men’s fashion early on, starting with fragrances by launching scents such as ”Monsieur de Givenchy” and ”Eau de Vetyver”, and in 1969, the couturier launch of his men’s ready-to-wear line, ”Givenchy Gentleman”. The collection championed a balance between classicism and casualness, and transferred the designer’s view of the look of a true gentleman.

Before that though, Givenchy was drawn to women’s fashion as well. In 1952 he presented the “separates” collection, consisting of light blouses and skirts blending simplicity with architectural lines, a stark contrast with the more restricted spirit of the time. The Givenchy style was born and it continued to evolve into a subtle alliance of elegance and dazzle, pure lines and sophistication.

The original boutique was located in the courtyard of his headquarters at 3 Avenue George V, Paris, and has remained the company’s main offices to this day.

Hubert stepped down, in 1995, from the house that he founded and one of his successors has been Alexander McQueen.

What is the ”Givenchy Gentleman” style?

Well, as reflection of Hubert de Givenchy’s temperament and personal history, the artistic direction is resolute and undeniable: the Givenchy man is above all a gentleman. His style is imbued with restraint and aristocratic distinction. The designer’s definition of masculine elegance champions a subtle mix of classicism and ease.
