Marilyn by Andy Warhol is heading to auction

Christie's

At Christie’s New York auction this May, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn by the one and only Andy Warhol will be up for sale. Painted by Warhol in 1964 following Marilyn Monroe's death in 1962, this painting amongst three others canvases constitutes The Shot Marilyn collection which is perhaps the most iconic series of paintings in the world. But what about the name of the painting some of you might wonder? At Andy Warhol’s studio Silver Factory in 1984, a performance artist named Dorothy Podber walked in and asked Warhol if she could shoot his colorful paintings of Marilyn Monroe stacked against the wall, and well, that is what she literally did although Warhol reasonably thought she would only take a photo! The seller of this masterpiece is the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation Zurich which is a foundation that strives after “improving the lives of children the world over by establishing support systems centered on providing healthcare and educational programs” and it will donate all of the money from the sale. Shot Sage Blue Marilyn by Andy Warhol is expected to become the most expensive artwork from the 20th century ever sold as it is estimated to fetch $200 million US, so the incoming money will come to great use and help a lot of children around the world.
