Stairway House in Tokyo

Nendo

A unique Stairway House as you have never seen before. Well, that is what the Japanese design firm, nendo, has completed in a quiet residential area of Tokyo.The three story house is created for three generations of the same family, and as other houses and apartment buildings pressing around the site, the architectural volume was pushed to the north to take in daylight, ventilation, and greenery of the yard into the living environment by a large glass front southern façade.

The rooms for the older couple are located on the first floor, considering the possible difficulties going up and down the stairs, and the younger couple and their child reside on the second and third floor. The stairway and greenery connects the upper and lower floor, and therefore, preventing the parties from feeling isolated from each other. The structure of the house aims to connect the interior to the yard, bond one household to another as well as expanding further out to join the environs and the city!
